Episodes
RHLSTP #634 - Heckled by Van Morrison - The second part of this extraordinary interview with comedian, actor and writer Lenny Henry. Rich quizzes Lenny about his attempt to break America with the film Eddie Murphy rejected, True Identity and how it led to Lenny taking control of his future projects, how the Three of a Kind were chosen and why it triumphed over other sketch shows of the era, Lenny’s illustrious acting career and the tricky role that both Rich and he have played, plus appearing on the brilliant The Assembly. #460 Perfectly Plated Avocado Toast - Richard records his sixth podcast in four days (how is that even possible?) and has a new question about what constitutes cheating. His guest is gazebo building stand-up, Ed Byrne. They discuss why he hasn’t been on the show as often as Sara Pascoe, how many lives he has saved, how Angela Griffin possibly got the edge over Ed and his wife on Mr and Mrs and the humour that can be found in the worst circumstances and why Ed has chosen to write a show about the death of his brother, Paul. Rich also attempts to replace Ed with AI (not so he can cheat with him though) and possibly for the second time questions his Neanderthal heritage. 27/10/26 Nuclear Perineum - Rich and Ally are back. Or are they? Is this even happening? Let’s hope not because our PM has advised us to stuck up on legumes for an upcoming and unspecified disaster. Well, it can’t be worse than what’s happening here. 29/10/26 Take Me To Poundland - Rich and Ally cover the big news of the day, the fact that Poundland might be going out of business. What could have caused this? Plus a report from a Poundland where you can get batteries for a pound, but probably not very good ones. 30/10/26 Cryptocuntacy - It’s the last Newsround of the week and the month and maybe ever if it keeps nose-diving at this rate. Rich and Ally discuss the daring theft of some imaginary money by some people who don’t deserve it from some people who did nothing to earn it. Plus a report from inside a Cryptomine. RHLSTP Book Club #199 - I Think My Name is Brodie - Rich interviews the legendary interviewer Clive Anderson about his career and his surprising new book from a dog’s point of view, I Think My Name is Brodie. Find out how Clive performed on the first night of the Comedy Store, how he wrote most of the defining sketch for Smith and Jones, how his interviewing technique got him into occasional trouble (which Rich can identify with) and what really happened with the Bee Gees. They also talk about the unique bond between a dog and its human, why Clive wanted to write a memoir for a dog, how he chose the voice for the audiobook and what prompted this unexpected direction. Plus some stuff about Edward I and what a strong and unpleasant man he was. RHLSTP #633 - OoooooKaaaaaay - Rich is back at the Podcast Room talking to someone who first rang his comedy bell, it’s Sir Lenny Henry. They chat about the early years of Lenny’s long and varied career, why Lenny feels comfortable talking about some of the more personal and difficult parts of his childhood in his latest stand up tour “Still At Large”, why Tiswas was so important to Richard (and arguably more important to Lenny), working with Cannon and Ball at the height of their fame, the transition from working men’s club to the alternative comedy circuit (and how Lenny is one of the last links to the comedians of the 70s) and the madness of the Black and White Minstrel Show and Lenny’s reluctant part in it. Incredible stories from a comedian who has really seen it all over the last 50+years. See Lenny at the Hackney Empire on the 3rd November https://www.fane.co.uk/lenny-henry SUPPORT THE SHOW! #457 Platinum Heart - Rich is back in New Milton to continue his Edinburgh Fringe without going to Edinburgh run and is a bit perplexed by a T shirt that Twitter has been trying to make him buy. His guest is veteran stand-up and cheater of death Markus Birdman. They chat about his journeyman status on the circuit, whether being at a school where your dad worked propelled both Rich and Markus towards comedy, Markus' decision to go on Britain’s Got Talent and whether Simon Cowell understands comedy, how Markus has turned two strokes and a heart operation into comedy, a scary ghost story and why two motorcycle accidents was enough to stop Markus getting on a bike again (not Rich though - he loves motorcycling). 19/10/26 Ameliorate the Situation - Rich and Ally start a brand new week covering the only news stories that matter: the non-discovery of Amelia Earhart’s plane and Andy Burnham coming down hard, but not hard enough on people playing music on public transport. All packed into five minutes as usual, with limited same phrases. 20/10/26 Potty Trained Interloper - Rich and Ally attempt to talk about a serious news story, but their studio is invaded by a malicious force which they have to deal with. At least they nearly kept to their time this time. 22/10/26 Dirty Pigeons - Rich and Ally are here to talk about Kyle Maclachlan and very expensive Pokemon cards. Lots of singing in this one, so if you don’t like that then best avoid this. I’d say best avoid the whole thing in general, but I can’t tell you what to do. 23/10/26 Sticky Globes - Rich and Ally would like to apologise to the pigeon community for any offence caused by yesterday’s Newsround. Today we look at smashed historical artefacts and who will be the next BondJamesBond. Will it be Ally? Watch this space. RHLSTP Book Club #198 - Felled - Richard chats to author Andrew Hankinson about his new book about the destruction of the Sycamore Gap, Felled. They also discuss his previous books about Raoul Moat and New York’s Comedy Cellar, plus whether modern UK comedy is failing to push boundaries in the same was as US comics. Then they chat about the new book and how it’s as much about Andrew as the tree or the crime. What does it all say about the crisis of masculinity? Are we all trying to impress our repressed dads and how do we cope when we lose them? Why did people get so upset about the loss of a tree when there might not be the same level of anger over an actual murder? What drove the men who did this and can we ever be sure? And is there a new trend of authors questioning themselves and their own lives in their work? RHLSTP #632 - Bin Face vs Bin Juice - Rich is feeling a bit better. Is it because of God? If so God has also sent him a loquacious guest at this difficult 8th gig of the Fringe - it’s stand-up veteran and agitator Mark Thomas. Mark reminisces about the crazy acts that populated the circuit when he started 40 years ago, how he got the Kurdish National Medal of Honour, how he is the world’s most arrested comedian (impressive given the competition), what it’s like to have the red dot of a sniper rifle appear on your forehead, how activism got him a free trip to the cinema, his surprising love of Kung Fu films and much more. #454 Thigh-Eyed - Richard’s non-Edinburgh Edinburgh Fringe continues as he reveals the latest put downs from his much-funnier-than-him children. His guest is podcast king and fine stand up Adam Rowe. They discuss how doing an advert led to threats of violence, putting your stand up specials on Youtube for free, turning romantic heartbreak into comedy, how the Have A Word podcast has taken the UK by storm, whether sharks are better than dolphins, how you can still say whatever you like in comedy and whether therapy is good for comedians. 13/10/26 Andy Burnham Is a Liar - Rich and Ally are back to discuss the result of the Pottery Throwdown and the proof that Andy Burnham’s pants on on fire, with proof straight from the crocodile’s mouth. Also how did Ziggy lose her arms? We might find out today. Don’t miss it. Makes GB News look woke as fudge. 14/10/26 Are You Taking The P*ss - Rich and Ally are back for a post-prandial Newsround which you probably don’t want to watch while you’re eating, especially if you’re eating a Solero, about a dastardly criminal and his propensity for destruction. No kink shaming intended. Though you should be ashamed of your kinks. Or at the very least not proud of them. 16/10/26 Time Tinkerer - Rich and Ally get into some quite personal territory that you might wish to skip through, before being the only media outlet being brave enough to turn against the dictatorial star at the centre of our solar system. Should it wear clothing of any kind? Probably not. RHLSTP Book Club #197 - 31 Inventions That Built Our World - In a book club first an author (that I am not married to) has come to Hitchin for a face to face chat. Jonn Elledge is here to discuss his latest book 31 Inventions That Built Our World as well as how close he came to being in a Harry Potter film. They chat about his previous books about borders and conspiracy theories (and a possibly true one about Britney Spears) and then discuss the infrastructure of our modern world that we take for granted and how it got here. This includes how the car helped create the concept of teenagers and changed the world of dating, why electric cars failed to gain traction the first time they were introduced and why people thought they were only for women, how lighting destroyed the concept of first and second sleeps, how William Huskisson might not be the first person to be killed by a train and how he was the third most famous aspect of his own death anyway and how this book changes the way you look at the world, Buy the book here - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/31-inventions-that-built-our-world-from-the-sunday-times-1-bestselling-author-of-a-history-of-the-world-in-47-borders-jonn-elledge/fcf314aacc4bcd9b SUPPORT THE SHOW! RHLSTP #631 - Champagne Supernova - Richard is four shows into his Fringe run and has crossed the one line that Ricky Gervais fans will not tolerate and he’s a bit under the weather and immune compromised so this may be his last show. Luckily his guest is a healing force of nature - Felicity Ward. They talk about Covid, death, divorce and cancer and how these things are all comedy gold, plus Dancing with the Stars, being the Australian David Brent (and a second red line for Gervais fans), getting cast in another one series but brilliant show, Time Bandits and meeting Lisa Kudrow and whether Richard could do with a therapist and whether it’s worth having kids in case you lose an organ. #453 Unchained Melody - Richard has got very angry with a cold caller - was he in there right? His guest is brilliant stand up and creator of new TV comedy “The Change”, Bridget Christie. In an explosive opening they discuss why Richard isn’t presenting the Masked Singer (amongst much else) and why he is evil for eating chocolate buttons, but then things calm down a bit as they discuss Bridget’s major TV debut, whether men do an equal share of household duties and the app that might help, why there are so few comedy shows about middle aged women, how getting older can be liberating and how amazing it is to have a channel and production team that let you get on with your vision. Plus working with Jerome Flynn and what it was like for Richard to introduce him on Top of the Pops. 5th October 2026 - Randrew Andrew’s No Can Do - It’s a new week on Newsround, but same old rubbish. Today Rich, Ally and channel-mandated co-host Ziggy look at Andrew Mountbattenburg-Iceburg-Lettuce-Withagladsomemind- Windsor-Peppapigland attempt to prosecute the police who dared arrest him when he’s (apparently) done nothing wrong. With the interview that the lamestreamers would kill for Randrew Andrew himself. 7th October 2026 - Penile System - It’s a serious topic for today’s Newsround - is it OK to kill a murderer or does that just make you a murderer too? Who better to work this out than a washed-up comedian, a 134 year old ventriloquist dummy and a naked baby with a disembodied arm? No one that is who. 8th October 2026 - Flea Glob - Rich and Ally (and Ziggy?) look at the upcoming new pandemic and the return of the plague and try to accentuate the positive. They chat about Reece’s spooky childhood, failing to catch bats in a net and having his magic tricks spoiled by his Uncle Geoff, how schools in the 70s had a definite echo of the Victorian about them, an horrific car crash (thankfully with no fatalities) and the part played by a tiny plastic skull, the 2016 appearance of clowns across Europe, the furious running knot man, why the devil does what he does and why there won’t be a filmed version of the Inside Number 9 stage show. They chat about all the terrible things that have happened to her since her last appearance, which make Richard’s puny cancers seem pathetic, finding the funny in your own father’s funeral, why Susie ended up with Thatcher as her Mastermind specialist subject, generational differences and why our parents were more worried about appearances than our grandparents, bouncing back from a heart attack and making the BBC front page on your death. 29th September 2026 - No Speculation - Rich and Ally cover a story that you won’t have read about it in LSM, some suspicious activity around RAF Fairford. Wednesday 23rd September 2026 - Shrinkflaktion - After a brief personal spat Rich and Ally look at Ebola and chocolate bars, but not at the same time. Has chocolate got smaller? Did it get bigger under Tony Blair’s leadership? Why didn’t Ally sing “Twix can only get bigger” at that point? Is brand curator a job that you can be proud of? And a special report from inside a chocolate factory, but by which character? Thursday 24th September 2026 - News 101 - The latest opinion polls are out and it’s bad news for Nigel Farage, but not particularly good news for any of the parties, though Andy Burnham seems particularly happy. RHLSTP Book Club #194 - The Lost Films of Hollywood - Rich has a remote chat with two men who have collaborated on an amazing book and art project yet never spoken to each other before, David Quantick and Chris Barker. They discuss where the idea to create a calendar and book imagining that famous movies were remakes, and showing the poster of the original came from, how it became an immediate kickstarter success story, getting the tone it all right, deciding to self-publish and why it’s such an appealing concept. Plus David talks about his new novel The Hyena (out in November). I highly recommend you rush to buy remaining copies of Lost Films right now! You won’t regret it. RHLSTP #627 - Sponge Bunnies - Rich is back at the Podcast Room and his guests are two of the world’s top magicians Penn Jillette (sadly without Teller, although let’s say he was there, you’d never know the difference and Piff the Magic Dragon, currently in the UK with their urine soaked magic show, Piff and Pop’s Magic Shop. Penn, who said before that he wouldn’t be saying much, says a lot and gives us some great background on his reluctant appearance on Miami Vice, Piff performs some audio-described magic (whilst not doing magic) and Rich regrets not having a posse, Piff then does some real magic, though it’s Rich who is really doing it. Rich finally gets them to talk about their new show which has an impressive denouement and Piff explains why it was better not to win America’s Got Talent. They don’t even get time to talk about Piff cloning his dog for $60,000 or any of the other stuff Rich had ready to discuss, but it’s a surreal and wonderful 45 minutes of mayhem. #446 Hi di Hi - Richard is doing more topical jokes that will be slightly out of date at time of broadcast but a valuable resource for the people of the future. His guest is comedian, author and potato hat wearer Jenny Eclair. They chat about the Bay City Rollers, the portrait of Les Gray, how cystitis ruined the bingo, the sexual allure of Greg Davies, childish comedians coping with the devastation of middle age, whether Richard will survive to have any life after his children have left home, their various ear complaints and how Jenny met her husband under a car. Not quite the topics of discussion when they shared a flat at the Fringe in the 1990s. Tuesday 8th September - Monkey Glue - Rich and Ally get a visit from the politician who never listens, before looking into the blackheads of Dover and their multiple use balaclavas. Plus why the RNLI are the worst people in Britain. Wednesday 9th September 2026 - Eleclution- Rich is in the news again (broadly speaking) but only on Newsround will you find out the real reasons. But the other less important news that no one would lead with is the 10% chance of the extermination of humanity. But don’t worry about that… Thursday 10th September 2026 - Black Shorts - Rich and Ally are today looking at what it’s appropriate for politicians to offer the electorate if they win. It’s better than it sounds. But not much better. Friday September 11th 2026 - Tinned Fish Aficionado - The Lame Stream Media is trying to bury today’s main news story beneath something that happened a quarter of a century ago and they don’t even have the right date. Rich and Ally are here to put that right. And by God they really go deep into this thing. Strap in. This is going to be as hard for you as it is for me. Welcome to all the Chris Moyles listeners. RHLSTP Book Club #193 - All About My Mother - Richard chats with actor and now brilliant writer, Rachael Stirling about her biography of her mother, Diana Ring, All About My Mother. They discuss how you remain objective when you are writing about a relative, how as well as being a wonderful portrait of Rigg, this is a book about mothers and daughters and the love and complications that entails and also the power of talking about intimate moments like squeezing cysts or biting your baby’s bum. Also find out how Rachael cashed in her laminated shag card, Benny Hill’s awful seduction technique, why Rachael’s Bond audition did not go as well as her mother’s and why she eats a tiny bit of her mum’s ashes on the first night of a play. RHLSTP #626 - Maths is Sh*te - Rich is back at the Edinburgh Fringe, 39 years after his first appearance. His guest is fiery MP turned brilliant comic, Mhairi Black. They talk about how she became the youngest MP since 1667 (maybe), why the toxic, alcohol-sodden Houses of Parliament was not the place for her, her record breaking swearing, calling Rishi Sunak a dickhead (or not), impressing David Cameron and the media attention and death threats that come with it all. Plus thoughts on Farage, Scottish Independence and Brexit in Mhairi’s usual uncompromising stance. Plus ghosts, ham hands, how Mhairi pivoted into acting and the ultimately doomed United Kingdom and its outdated parliament. Great start to the Edinburgh run. Friday 4th September 2026 - Aunty Christ - Rich and Ally have been shook by their interloper this week, but now he’s back at school and everything is quiet and to be honest it all feels wrong. He may have broken this thing. But the team attempt to get to the bottom of the crocodile’s transgressions and work out who the anti-Christ is before wisely giving up before their five minutes is up. You’ll probably like it. Wednesday 2nd September 2026 - Crocodile Rock - In today’s Newsround we interview the crazy character who interloped yesterday and find him to be quite a down to earth guy, even if he has offended medieval Scotland. We also talk to a returning political force as we find out why Farage went up on the roof of parliament today. Will Hahayourbuttsmells crash the party? What the Hell is going on on this previously serious news programme? Tuesday 1st September 2026 - Never Work With Children or Puppets - Rich is back but a terrifying new interloper beyond his control threatens to and succeeds in disrupting the serious news service. In the quiet times between Rich and Ally try to ascertain if a moon of Phobos is an alien space craft, but instead finds out how they do things in medieval Scotland. Plus an actual joke. Monday 31st August 2026 - Podcast America - Rich and Ally are back after a lovely summer holiday of death and there’s more bad news to get us started with the loss of a popular Newsround character. But which one? The boys talk about Canada standing up to Trump in a way that no one else is brave enough to do.With a special report from Lake America. #445 The Drug Rats of Porthcawl - Richard is delighted to be back for series 27 of RHLSTP and to be within the short-lived window where he can do topical stand up material. It’s going to be the last time in a while, though there’s talk of a RHLSTP tour! Hie guest is dancer turned comedian turned actor and writer Thanyia Moore. They chat about the lost Tango ads, why she wrote a stand up show about being a bully, the mystery of how the unusual spelling of her name came about, what she did to upset some of the people of Wales (though some of them agreed with her), how appearing on Question Team led to her wing-walking and water-skiing, whether the skills on her Spotlight entry are genuine and could she could beat Richard over 100 metres? RHLSTP Ed Fringe 2019 #11 Richard Osman - The Oldest Person In Scotland - Richard has hopefully the definitive list of what people should avoid putting inside their chuffs and maybe we can leave that behind now - HIs guest will finally reveal what nationality he is - it’s TV’s Richard Osman. There is some discussion of who from Lee and Herring has had the more successful career (no spoilers) and whether there is any danger of a Slattery style breakdown from doing too many episodes of Pointless, whether House of Games will ever offer psychological training, how to get into the dying medium of TV and what is an appropriate height differential for lovers.. Plus why is the Express obsessed with Osman? Is he gay? And a also a brand new quiz show for Herring to lose, played live in front of and then involving the audience? Ed Fringe 2011 #25 - Cock Bongo - It's the end, my friends and someone is set to win half a bottle of olive oil, some Weetabix and the monarchy of Edinburgh. And we've saved the best till last as Count Buckules is here to tell us about the times he has said inappropriate things on 6Music, how his computer cable must be placed "just so", a trip to New Zealand with a ventriloquist, what a cock bongo would involve and what it would take for him to fellate Keith Allen. Rich is remarkably indiscreet as always, spreading possibly libellous rumours about certain celebrities and revealing the genesis of a famous Stewart Lee sketch and a classic bit of Alan Partridge. Thanks to everyone at The Stand and at the British Comedy Guide for their sterling work. Might we do it again next year? ... Surely not. They talk about why the Hell they are returning to the Fringe to do a sketch show, their enduring friendship and how that informs their work together, Charly’s brain tumour and why she called it Britney and why that led to them both being called Britney, clouds in film studios, judging pizza with Steve Carrell, living another life in a coma and why Richard would only be a very specialist interest on wikifeet. Ed Fringe 2011 #14 - The Oxfam of Comedy - What's that unusual atmosphere in the air today? Could it be genuine reverence. Rich is joined by one of his absolute comedy heroes, Barry Cryer and is trying to be on his best behaviour. Barry's butterfly brain means he has a story about everyone and everything that gets mentioned from Nicholas Parsons to Stewart Lee and Jack Benny to Richard Pryor. He also comes up with the best answer yet to the Keith Allen Question (as it is known in parliament). So just sit back and listen to a comedy legend (which is pretty much that all Rich does in this episode) and find out who's really the king of Edinburgh. Rich has also just been offered an advert where he'd have to live in a perspex box for three days (he may not take it). What a lovely way to spend the afternoon. Come Closer To The Screen We’re on the road still and at the Lowry in Salford where the lightest local headline is not really ripe for frivolity, but at least they are paying fitting tribute to their greatest painter. And it’s possible that the theatre is literally on fire, but Richard is not letting that stop him. The guest tonight is showbiz legend and punster extraordinaire, Jimmy Cricket and something that the RHLSTP audience might not be used to, proper jokes. But amongst the silliness, Jimmy reveals some fabulous stories about the days of the working men’s clubs, the summer camps or Ireland, Laurel and Hardy’s last tour, working with the Honey Monster, being a Papal Knight and why he still has the hunger for treading the boards in his wellies. There’s more, how his This is Your Life almost got derailed by a chance meeting and a letter from his Mamie. To buy Jimmy’s DVD or find out about his live dates or performances of his play check out his website - https://www.jimmycricket.co.uk/ It’s a heart-warming, corny and hilarious hour of chat. Ed Fringe 2019 #21 - Nine Minutes - Rich has just hit the 200 average crowd he coveted and worked out just how much his landlord has made from each ticket sold and there’s an end of term atmosphere as he meets Flo and Joan and John Kearns. With Flo and Joan the talk revolves around time travelling gang bangs, Bros’ Cheddar antics, double act rivalry and memories of Tring. With John, Richard is skittish from lack of sleep and counting down the time, but still manages to find out whether a plastic cup can substitute for false teeth and how the speaker of the House of Commons takes a shit. Thursday 30th July 2026 - Sweet Perineum - Rich and Ally are back with more news that you won’t hear anyone else, all squished into a five minute bulletin. Today they are looking at the wildfires sweeping in the world and wondering if they could be anything to do with global warming. Plus a very disturbing report from France or maybe Spain where the fires are going on (though that’s not what is disturbing). Plus a surprise visit. Keep watching til the end. Friday July 31st 2026 - Egg Head - Second Newsround of the week - oh ambassador with these Newsrounds we are really spoiling you. Today we look at something the Lamestream media won’t touch, because they are in the pay of the billionaires, corruption in FIFA or UEFA, whichever one it is. With the interview that everyone wants. RHLSTP Book Club 190 - The Umbrella Man and Other Stories - Another remote Book Club where Rich talks to author Martin Fitzgerald about his book about the JFK assassination, which looks at everything from a very different perspective by examining the witnesses and not worrying about whodunnit. Was the Umbrella Man really signalling to all the assassins that it was time to shoot (and wouldn’t that be a bit of a distraction rather than a help)? What was it that attracted these people to the relatively quiet part of the route in Dealey Plaza rather than the ticker tape of Main Street? Is it possible to understand the amateurish nature of the detective work from a 21st Century perspective? Why did some witnesses hog the limelight whilst others disappeared immediately and did some people insert themselves into the story who weren’t there? How did the racism endemic in Dallas at the time affect the responses of the African- American witnesses? What effect did the assassination have on Dallas as a whole? And how easy is it to be a reliable witness or a truly impartial judge of what happened? It’s a terrific book and a really interesting approach to the event and I thoroughly recommend it.
